NOHA has been a model of inspiration for other quality networks and presented as an example of good practice in several occasions, for example:
- At the Launching meeting for Socrates Programme
- At Bologna Seminar Mantova on integrated programmes (11-12 April 2003)
- At Cluj Conference on Joint Degrees – Romania (24-25 October 2003)
NOHA is the first network of universities at European level dealing with the development of Humanitarian Action Education. It seeks greater professionalism among humanitarian workers through the provision of solid intellectual grounding and the development of sound concepts and principles that would in turn lead to "good practice". It also contributes to greater awareness of humanitarian issues among the broader public and among policy makers.
NOHA is unique in the combination of elements that define its European dimension: NOHA Faculty members discuss and reflect together on both curriculum development and didactics of the course. They also participate in teacher exchange and joint teaching programmes, thus maximising the strengths of its participating institutions through expertise complementarity.
The NOHA Master's is an ambitious, multidisciplinary, inter-university, international, and multi-lingual programme the aim of which is to bridge the gap between theory and practice through interdisciplinary and participatory learning and case-based approaches.
NOHA has an Intensive Programme, which is internationally recognised and valued. It has become a forum for dialogue and exchange among academics, students, NGOs, practitioners and policy makers.
NOHA combines: A truly egalitarian decentralised system by which each university has institutionalised the programme, making it its own with the support at the highest level; A unity of purpose, mission, search of professional profiles and jointly created academic structures which makes it really European.
Of these structures NOHA counts on its association, "NOHA Association", with its statutes and organs approved under Belgian law, for a joint process of decision making. NOHA has also a jointly approved Charter with common procedures and a system of quality assurance.
NOHA is constantly seeking to contribute to the advancement of scholarship and quality of education in humanitarian action with:
- More than 150 core teachers in over 10 disciplines related to humanitarian action.
- Strong inter-institutional support and co-operation with capacity for developing academic experts.
NOHA has developed a system of periodical meetings of the Board of Directors, backed by the local teams and a system of internal and external evaluation. This aims at constant monitoring of the quality of the programme, its adequate response to changing professional profiles and its continuous revision and development of curricula.
Employability - For the first 10 years, NOHA has produced over 1200 graduates who work at all levels and positions in all kinds of organisations (intergovernmental and non-governmental, national and international) both in the field and in headquarters all around the world.
The strong commitment of the NOHA Universities is extended through a broader network of associates in each of the EU countries and at the broader level of 83 European Faculties dealing with related issues. This is the Thematic Network of Humanitarian Development Studies of which NOHA is the starting point and the core component.
more than ten years of experience and work, NOHA has become a network of continuous search for quality in the training of humanitarian personnel in charge of international co-operation, and a concrete example of European solidarity and response to situations of complex emergencies all around the world.
