Founded in 1769

Lying at the cross-roads of the Mediterranean, UM has been, over its 400-year history, the hub for international academic exchange in Malta. As the leading higher education institution of the islands, its structures are in line with the Bologna Process and the European Higher Education area.

The University carries out academic research and provides a vibrant higher education setting in the arts, sciences and the humanities. The courses at UM are designed to produce highly-qualified professionals in multiple disciplines. The UM alumni community is growing exponentially and UM graduates are found in key positions both nationally and internationally.

Today UM is composed of fourteen faculties, a number of interdisciplinary institutes and centres, three schools and a junior college. 

The language of instruction at UM is English.

Department of International Relations

The Department of International Relations at the University of Malta is a member of NOHA since 2014. It hosts a number of international students from Europe and beyond, both at graduate and undergraduate level. The Department boasts numerous Erasmus and other international agreements, which serve to facilitate student exchange Europe-wide and globally.

The programmes offered by the Department include a B.A. Honours track (International Relations), B.A. General track, M.A. preparatory programme, M.A. by research (International Relations), M.A. in Humanitarian Action, Ph.D by research (International Relations) and the EMJMD Programme in International Humanitarian Action (NOHA+). It also from time to time offers short (CPD) courses for professionals wishing to upgrade their skills.

The Department’s programmes prepare students to enter the increasingly globalised labour market and take up jobs in the diplomatic service, government ministries, EU institutions, local and international governmental and non-governmental organisations, international institutions, media organisations, the army, large corporations, think tanks and research centres.

  • Studying in Malta

    The Maltese islands contain a remarkable mixture of the ancient and the modern and influences from many cultures and civilisations. The University of Malta is one of the oldest in the Mediterranean. However, it is looking firmly into the future while blending tradition with innovation.

    The main campus is situated at Msida. There are two other campuses. One is the Valletta campus, housed in the Old University Building which dates back to the founding of the Collegium Melitense. The Valletta Campus serves as a prestigious setting for the hosting of international conferences, seminars, short courses and summer schools. It is also the venue of the University's International Collaborative Programmes, the Research, Innovation & Development Trust and the Conference and Events Unit.

    The other is the Gozo Campus on Malta’s sister-island, Gozo, where part-time evening degree and diploma courses in various areas of study are offered. This campus also provides a venue for short courses and seminars and it houses the Guesten Atmospheric Research Centre, within the Department of Geosciences.

  • Accommodation

    Malta offers a variety of accommodation options for students, located around and close to the University campus, to suit different needs and budgets. Students are free to choose the lodging which suits them best.
     
    Students registered for studies with the University of Malta may opt to live at the University Residence or Hotel Kappara. Both properties are administered by the University.

    The cost of living in Malta is on the whole considerably lower than in neighbouring European countries. Below you will find an approximate guide of the monthly expenses you are likely to incur while studying in Malta.
