Call for Associated Members

One aspect of NOHA’s 2020 Strategy in terms of outreach is to expand the opportunities for those outside of the network to engage and interact with NOHA. One avenue for this is to open a possibility for external academics and practitioners to become associated members of the network. This status would be a chiefly nominal one but should enable NOHA to expand its network and visibility. Previous experiences have shown that NOHA is not able to be represented at all conferences or key events in the humanitarian sector or related academia. The associated status would be a possibility to improve this and, particularly, make NOHA more diverse.

Associated Status:

Members with associated status will be listed on the website and NOHA can highlight their work or research on the website and social media. Additionally, members with associated will form a pool of new experts which can be drawn from by NOHA for:

  • the review of JIHA articles,
  • inviting experts for organising events and conferences,
  • teaching and guest lectures at NOHA universities.

Likewise, updated lists of associated members will be sent around to NOHA faculty and staff with research interests and publications to foster collaboration with new associated members. None of these opportunities will be guaranteed for associated members and it will be made clear that not all associated member will be contact for these opportunities, but their profile and expertise will be considered for future NOHA activities.

Profile of Candidates:

An inaugural class of associated members should be created from academics and practitioners that have past experiences with NOHA and invited to join through this new mechanism as a way of making the relationship more formal. Following this, a call for associated members will be put on the website and advertised at specific events and conferences.

Associated members should be active researchers on topics related to humanitarian action or be practitioners working with humanitarian organisations. For academics, the associated status should be kept open for PhD students and junior academics, as these may be more likely to highlight this status at conferences than those with established university or institutional affiliations.

Approval of Candidates:

Lists of applicants will be maintained by NOHA’s communications and administrative manager and will be presented to the NOHA AISBL Board of Directors for acceptance or denial of the candidates. The list will be sent around to the NOHA AISBL Board of Directors at least one week in advance of the meeting so that this approval process does not take up significant time or energy at the meetings.

*Please note that, pending acceptance, your profile and expertise will be considered for future NOHA activities depending on demand. However, we cannot guarantee that you will be contacted for these activities.
